In light of a world which now operates beyond its many cultural boundaries, what sacred symbols today deepen our understanding of the human condition? Is the human condition being ground underfoot, at its lowest point, even at rock-bottom as so many economists might present? Or, is it rising, pheonix-like, in full colour and majesty, with all the mystery of secrets yet to be revealed, out of the hopelessness of a near global recession?
Γνώθι σ ‘αυτόν – Know thyself*
As messages were received in the vapours of the Delphic Oracle, so does this international crucible of talent, united for the first time under the same roof, convey their symbols. Mysterious and enthralling, each artist offers a facet of hope, altered and strange; and yet familiar enough in its presentation to remind each one that the spark of life’s breath lives not in any visible organ but in the soul’s in
terpretation of the golden age inside each human being and a connection to each other. These transformative images and performances strip away the weight of mutal illusion leaving one to acquire empathy for each spark of the combination of soul material captured in this glamourous mix as they become the Oracle – the meta-paradigm of today’s cognisant revelation.

Spellbound is a group exhibition of international artists whose work gazes into the understanding, experience and influences of the world through magic, the mysterious art of altering realities either by supernatural forces or through knowledge of occult laws unknown to mainstream science. The incantation of language through image brings to this viewing space a conjuring of perceptions. It offers the magical doctrine of cosmic sympathy between things visible and things invisible; each rendering is a glimpse into the now and the tomorrows of illusions of both the present and the future.

NATIONALLY ACCLAIMED ARTIST ALEXANDRA ELDRIDGE
REVEALS NEW WORK AT LAGUNA BEACH’S ART CUBE GALLERY
The work of internationally acclaimed artist Alexandra Eldridge has debuted at Laguna Beach’s Art Cube Gallery, where members of the public are invited to view her newest paintings that inspire, dazzle and celebrate self-discovery.
Art Cube gallery, 266 Forest Avenue, is among the first in Southern California to feature Alexandra’s work, which incorporates elements of surrealism and magic realism, as well as rich archetypal symbols, renderings and organic material.
The work is among her most ambitious to date, including “Remember the Moments,” which explores absence and memory and incorporates a map of Brooklyn from 1900, poetry and a ladder that speaks of rising to another level of consciousness. Another work, “The Red Book,” is inspired by the psychologist Carl Jung’s encounters with the unconscious with words from Jung’s book of the same title scratched into the painting.
“Alexandra is a gifted artist and we are delighted to represent her marvelous work,” said gallery owner Sonja Simidzija. “Her highly sought paintings add a new perspective to our gallery and offer an inspiring experience to visitors and collectors alike.”
Alexandra is the newest member of the gallery, which will open a second location on September 1 at 346 North Coast Highway.
The daughter of artist parents, Alexandra was born in New Jersey, studied art at Ohio University and settled into a community founded on the teachings of William Blake. She later moved to Santa Fe to raise her children and pursue her art with studies at the Santa Fe Institute of Fine Art and workshops in Florence, Cambridge, and New York.
Alexandra has shown in major galleries from New York to Paris to Belgrade and was recently part of a group show in London. Celebrity collectors include actors Steve Buscemi, Edie Falco and William Hurt who said, “there are two tides, one of light and another of muffling, suffocating… absence. Alexandra is clearly in the light.”
Eldridge works with Venetian plaster and creates images with pigment, pencil, and elements of collage. To create texture she scratches through layers of plaster with razor blades. She burnishes the final layer to make the work shine and reveal the colors beneath. The colorful surfaces are distressed and incised with symbols, incised words, phrases and collage.
“My paintings have a narrative, but without a beginning or end,” Alexandra said. “They reflect the language of interior experiences, the movement of my psyche, and a rupturing of time and space that might shift one’s perspective to the universal.”
Alexandra has participated in more than 40 solo and group shows both in the United States and abroad. Alexandra has been commissioned to paint murals in the Place de Vosges, Paris, and her work has been used for the cover of eight books of poetry. Gallery presence has been found in Paris, London, Belgrade, New York, and Santa Fe.

Nuart Gallery is pleased to present, ‘The Art of Wandering’ an exhibition of new paintings by the artist Alexandra Eldridge. The exhibition will run from September 2through 18 with an opening reception on Friday, September 2 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. The artist will be present. Alexandra Eldridge’s images emerge from a place where contradictions are allowed, paradox reigns and reason is abandoned. In her search for inherent radiance in all things, the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Her works are primal and reflective, presenting an emotional landscape, often inspiring spiritual investigation. During a month spent in Paris she took on the role of the flâneur, or wanderer. Someone who, in Baudelaire’s words ”walks a city to experience it.” Through her unique cosmology, she transports us into her visual culture and shares her universe. Her new paintings reflect an intimate journey with deep awareness and these works are love letters to the presence of mind while wandering. Each painting is open, always in the middle of the experience without a concern for a destination. Images from the streets of Paris appear. French text from newsprint, bronze horses, iron gates and Beaux Art chandeliers populate her paintings. Venetian plaster finishes capture intimate imaginings through rich color, beautiful textures and a love of the word. Alexandra Edridge, born of artist parents received her BA in Art and literature at Ohio University. She has continued her education at Cambridge University, England, Santa Reparata Graphic Workshop in Florence, Italy, Penland College, and most recently The photographer’s Formulary in Montana. She cofounded an establishment for the arts, Golgonooza, based upon the philosophies of William Blake. She has had over 40 solo shows, and has participated in many group shows throughout the U.S. as well as many international exhibitions. She has had shows in Paris, London, Belgrade, New York, California, and Santa Fe. Alexandra has been commissioned to paint murals in the Place de Vosges, Paris, and her work has been used for the cover of eight books of poetry. Travelling, as an important part of her inspiration has led her to artist’s residencies on the Island of Elba, Italy, and the Valparaiso Foundation in Almeria, Spain. Art News, Art On Paper, New American Painting, and One Hundred Painter’s of the Southwest are just a few of the publications Alexandra has been featured in. Her work can be found in the collections of William Hurt, Steve Buscemi, and Edie Falco, along with many other prestigious collections. “My paintings emerge from a place where contradictions are allowed, paradox reigns and reason is abandoned. My search is for the inherent radiance in all things…the extraordinary in the ordinary.
As the process of painting parallels the movement of the psyche, it helps me to understand the world as a deeper reality. The rich soul experiences of my life become tangible.
Each painting is a small acknowledgment of the inner life that can perhaps reveal its own share of soul, and that share of soul many connect to someone else’s share of soul. Then perhaps beauty may be granted. “ AE

“While Alexandra Eldridge’s work is full of wit and whimsy, intellectual flights and visual intrigue, this literate sophistication is tempered by an equal sense of innocence in the presence of the mystery. Perhaps it is this ability to encompass the known and the unknowable, the finite body and the eternity of the soul that makes the integrity of this work so marvelously appealing. “ Jon Carver

“These works have a sense of hovering between permanence and fragility. Her almost amorphous, primal figures resemble dogs, bulls, apes, skulls, sea serpents, fantastic fish and birds which float against a background of shattered rainbow luminosity. Such figures are reminiscent of shadows recalled from our ancient collective subconscious and caught in an ongoing hallucination where they exist in a bizarre suspension between reality and dreams. These are ominous and omnipresent obscure creatures. Some mingle with natural delicate floral motifs. Such images of opposition exude a tension verging on a psychedelic experience.”

“We Are Here So Lightly” is a collection of old Chinese scrolls that I have painted, printed, glued, sewn, and stained as an act of aesthetic and spiritual resuscitation. Found texts, created photographic images, painted reconstructed symbols and words, play with and against each other asking an array of questions of the viewer. They are an acknowledgment of transience, impermanence, and imperfection in their “wabi sabi ” sensibility , evoking a poetic and metaphorical state. Along with a palimpsest of old papers gathered in my travels, fabrics, and cyanotypes, there is an imaginative layering of histories, cultures, and metaphors. Chairs fall, chairs rise up into other realms. Snakes, rabbits, dress forms take on a visionary relationship to the world. An acceptance of transience and paradox is the thread running through all of the work.
Paul Trachtman on this body of work: writer for the Smithsonian
“What is important about these paintings is not the subject matter, but without the subject they would not be so important. Through this paradox, they invite deep reflection on illusion and reality. They refuse to be one or the other. They are spaces where the mind sees itself behind the scenes. They are dreams that invite us to wake up.”
